1. After the last snow, it was a true joy to be able to cross country ski on the River Path from Center City up to the Art Museum. I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard, and who continue to work, so that we can enjoy our city in this way. There were many, many grateful, grinning skiers on the path, seeing the River from a new perspective. What I would like to know is, why is it necessary to plow the snow off of all the sidewalks along the Kelly Drive so assiduously: why not leave a strip of snow for Cross-country skiers, as it has become a popular "urban" sport in recent years, and it is SO tempting to continue up past the Art Museum and along the River -- if only we had enough snow. (It's difficult to ski on the banks along the path that are either too deeply covered with plowed snow, too soft, or too unevenly angled.) Thanks for all the great work - it makes Philadelphia feel completely different. --Arden Kass
Where we have wider paths in the Fairmount Park system, such as Forbidden Drive in Wissahickon Valley Park, we only plow one vehicle width of the trail, allowing the remainder to be snow covered for cross-country skiing. The Kelly Drive paved recreation path is approximately the same width as our pick-up truck mounted snow plows. Therefore, the majority of the path’s width is paved with one pass of the plow. Further, the Kelly Drive path narrows at several locations, such as at the regatta grandstand, which requires that we plow the entire width to ensure safe passage for the majority of trail users. 2. Who will be responsible for maintaining the sprinkler system? --Thomas Vernon
Fairmount Park (Mark Focht, FPC)
3. Who is responsible for maintaining the Park on a daily basis? --Louise Clark Fairmount Park is responsible for the basic, day-to-day maintenance of the park, such as turf mowing, trash removal and snow removal. SRDC will fund additional maintenance such as planting bed maintenance, installation of seasonal plants, seeding and fertilization of lawns. (Mark Focht, FPC)
4. It is very hard to push a stroller across the Locust Street crossing due to the large bluestones. Can some other material be put down to make it easier to push wheels across the crossing? Or could a path be swept clear of bluestones to allow strollers and bikes to get across? --Melanie Watson
When the contractor leaves (in next 2 months or so) he will have to remove the ballast stones he put there as a truck wash. The ultimate solution is a paved, protected crossing. (Joe Syrnick, SRDC)
5. When will the landscaping between Race and Locust be finished? Are there plans to to add landscaping north of Race Street? --J. Williams
Race-Locust Streets will re-start on March 13th and will probably be complete in 2 months, at the most. North of Race, SRDC has a grant request pending to do some landscaping. If approved, this will be done. If not approved, the area will probably stay pretty much as is, except possibly for some clearing out of weedy stuff on lower trail opposite Skateboard Park. (Joe Syrnick, SRDC)
6. When will construction begin on the park from Locust to South Street? --Liz Alexander
We hope to start design summer 2006. Only ½ the funding needed for construction is currently in hand, but SRDC plans to build what it can with funds available. Construction could start in early 2008, which would jive pretty good with South Street bridge construction. (Joe Syrnick, SRDC). |
