| Schuylkill River Development Corporation in partnership with Fairmount Park Commission and the United States Army Corps of Engineers is now landscaping Schuylkill River Park from Race to Locust Streets. The project will include planting of shrubs, grasses and other vegetation in addition to the installation of benches and garbage cans. Contractors will be working until October 2005. Congratulations to all who made Schuylkill River Park a reality, after the landscaping is complete it will be such a huge asset to the city. Should become Philadelphia's newest treasure, and a magnet for future development.
Is rowing going to be a part of the future in the center city area? |

The Schuylkill Navy is planning a rowing event that will start from Bartram's Garden and go up the river to the West River Drive bridge sometime in 2005 or 2006.
SRDC's plans call for a dock to be installed at Bartram's GArden in 2005, a dock at the Fairmount Waterworks in 2006 and another dock around Walnut Street in 2007. |

The Schuylkill Navy, Schuylkill River Development Corporation and Bartram's Garden are planning a regatta on the Lower Schuylkill, tentatively called the Heart of Philadelphia Regatta. This will be a high school/college regatta starting just below Bartram's Garden and ending 3 to 4 miles upriver below Fairmount Dam, somewhere in Schuylkill River Park, where there will be a "festival" for spectators.
The Heart of Philadelphia Regatta is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd. Times to be announced. |

The Heart of the Philadelphia Regatta sounds great, should be a lot of fun.
Question? The upper schuylkill river along Kelly Drive always has a lot of activity with rowers, boaters even kayakers. Is that portion of the river open for public rowing, and if so are there any plans for the lower portion of the river through center city to see this type of rowing activity?
Thanks |

The new trail is wonderful. Thanks to everyone who stuck with it and are making Schuylkuill River Park a great asset to the city . We all know Philadelphia isn't the easiest place to get things done.
My question has to do with the Waterworks building . I read a while back about it being converted into a restaurant/ outdoor cafe. Does anyone know if this is still a go, and when will it be opening. |

As far as we know, it still is a "go." You can check out www.fairmountwaterworks.com At the moment, I don't see any information about your question on their website, but I'll see if we can get an answer from the Executive Director. Stay tuned.

From most of the models and future renderings of Schuylkill River Park I've seen, the landscaping seems to be mainly deciduous trees. I would love to see the Park get its fair share of evergreen's to help Philadlephia look alive during the long dreary winters. Firs,Pines, Spruce, Cedar trees you just can't have enough of from Nov to April. Landscape lighting makes for a nice added touch.
If you ever want to see an amazing sight, go down to Atlantic City in mid January. 99.9% of the city looks absloutely dead, no life to it at all. The whole city is dormant, tree's included. However if you venture to the grounds of the Borgata Casino it is truly awe-inspiring. It looks like Aspen Colorado, they bombed their outside grounds with 35,000 shrubs,3,100 trees(mostly evergreens),and 69 miles of irrigation tubing.
SRP certainly can't compete with a billion dollar casino but it can't be stressed enough how beautiful a couple hundred evergreens scattered around can lift your spirits during the barren winter.
