The Emerald Express

One of the waste industry's most successful partnerships between public and private interests is the Emerald Express. A collaboration between CSX, Waste Management, and Maryland and Virginia municipalities, the Emerald Express carries municipal solid waste (MSW) every night from a transfer station in Maryland to a landfill in Virginia. The unit train moves more than 480,000 tons of MSW a year.
Rail is the perfect solution to the problem of moving that much trash daily through the congested traffic of Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The Emerald Express reduces truck traffic and fuel emissions and runs at night, keeping the waste out of sight and off the minds of the public. "
